An Introduction to Puglia

The people of Puglia have exemplary deep-rooted characteristics that shine through as they take care of their land, greet an old friend, or when they pause their busy schedule to share a story or meal with a new friend.
Family is of paramount importance in this southern paradise, and if you visit, and are fortunate enough to be invited into someone’s personal home, I urge you to accept at once. You will thank me later, for the memories of enjoyable conversation and the aroma of delicious southern Italian specialties, will stay with you forever.
Welcome to the family, or as they say in Italian, Benvenuto alla famiglia”.
There is much to experience in Puglia; from the UNESCO World Heritage site of Alberobello and its unique trulli homes, to the unconditional commitment and unwavering pride in hospitality that is evident everywhere you go.

If you love the outdoors and opens seas - among your many choices are the complex network of caves in Castellana Grotte, or the intriguing coves and rocky beaches along the Gargano Peninsula and Polignano a Mare.

If you’re looking for ancient architecture, you need not look any further than the stunning Baroque specimens awaiting you in Lecce; or perhaps a trip to the Castel del Monte, an eight-sided castle that till today remains one of history’s greatest unsolved mysteries.

As with most Southern regions, Puglia has long been ignored by those who travel to Italy; but it has also been the secret destination of many a Northern Italian looking to relax and partake in the beauty of this serene land and its delicious foods.

In fact, if you are a gastronaut, and passionately travel the world seeking pleasures of the palate, you will quickly fall in love with Puglia as you discover the history, traditions and dedication of artisans old and new.

In recent years, the Pugliese have made concerted efforts to introduce the world to their incomparable and prized olive oils, preserved vegetables, remarkable wines, unique cheese, and prepared foods. This effort is now being recognized and appreciated not only in fine hospitality establishments, but also in the homes of appreciative and discerning consumers. Consumers, who undoubtedly are in search of the genuine and healthy lifestyle practiced throughout Puglia, commonly referred to as the Mediterranean diet.

I spent a few days in Foggia with my father as he was reunited with cousins that he thought had died in the war (WWII). My father passed away about a year after, sadly just days before returning for a one month long reunion. His last twelve months were filled with happy stories of his childhood, and the times he spent back home. I took his place that trip and brought back his ashes. I now spend one month their every year. The authors description of the hospitality in this region of Italy is spot on. I couldn't have described it better.
