Patsy's Pizza Name Debacle Settled
Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at 06:26AM
Final Judgment: Both entities are required to use their registered trade names.
The battle began when the owners of Patsy’s Italian Restaurant in the Theater District (opened in 1944) sued Patsy’s Pizzeria on 117th Street (which opened back in 1933). The basis for the lawsuit is the confusion caused to existing and prospective customers by opening a pizzeria in Syosset, LI, also with the Patsy’s name.
The confusion compounds when you take into consideration that the widow of the original owner of the 117th Street Patsy’s sold the license to the Patsy’s name to a group of businessmen who have opened pizzerias in the city.
The entire thing really became a circus of sorts, with audio “testimony” from the late Frank Sinatra, and video testimony from Jack LaLanne among others. The actual contention during the proceedings seemed to turn to which one of these establishments was the Patsy’s that Frank Sinatra referred to when speaking about Patsy’s.
Don’t worry, we’re confused too.
