Muzio Baking Company Closes Its Doors
Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at 08:41PM
Muzio’s has been a local icon for as far back as I can remember now. It was started back in 1929, by Italian immigrant Oriano Orsi. He was only nineteen years old at the time, and possessed a third grade education. However, Oriano knew that if he applied his skills and worked hard, he too would be able to achieve the American dream. Being one of the partners at Muzio was certainly a step in the right direction.
There are generations of families that have made stopping at the side door (even after-hours) to pickup a fresh hot loaf or bag of buns, a tradition.
Muzio Baking Company is just another example of the detrimental impact that the economy is having on the small and mid-sized business. The trickle effect of the cost of oil, has in turn increased the cost of ingredient deliveries and the overall production of the end-product.
The decision to shut down production was announced to all employees officially via a letter. For the most part, the union employees understand the difficulties being experienced by the current owners, and they too are saddened by the news.
We’ve been informed that aside from the current owners, 14 employees are left jobless and 200 local businesses are pulling their hair out trying to find a viable replacement. That unfortunately, is easier said than done, as many a restaurant, caterer and hotel have reputations for carrying this iconic product.
As a satisfied customer for nearly a decade, I express my heartfelt sadness for the closing of this institution.
