400-Years Ago Today, Galileo Galilei Debuts His Telescope in Italy

It was on August 25th 1609 when Galileo introduced a select audience of Venitian merchants to his design of this thing called a telescope. Contrary to popular belief, Galileo did not invent the telescope, although his radical design did take astronomy to new scientific heights. It was earlier that same year, that Galileo learned of this contraption called a telescope. It was then that he set out to build his own.

In a world where frequent scientific discoveries were being debuted, this one rapidly proved to be useful to scholars and desirable to the elite.
